What is Security Posture Management?

Security Posture Management is one of the newer phrases popping up in the conversation around cybersecurity and vulnerability assessment. But, what is it? And how can you use it to help support the cyber security goals of your business?

Security Posture Management is a fairly new phrase in cybersecurity. Fundamentally, security posture management is about recognising that there will inevitably be vulnerabilities in an environment and that there will always be improvements to be made.

Systems won’t always meet the requirements an organisation would like them to meet. But, as long as you are measuring where the deficiencies are and understanding whether or not there are particularly significant deficiencies in certain areas for certain assets, or whether there are particular times where more and more deficiencies are coming into a system- you’re able to really understand how you’re performing as a business.

Certainly, implementing security posture management puts your business in a much better position that if you were to take a certain point in time and saying “Okay, we have X amount of deficiencies in this piece of software or solution right now” and then doing the same thing a month later, six months later and so on.

Regardless of whether you’re talking about data, cloud, application; posture management can work right across the board, supporting the entirety of your business in its vulnerability awareness.

We are seeing differences and new approaches because of certain technologies having specific nuances that necessitate some variation, but security posture management can be applied to any area of technical security control within a business.
